While the ongoing 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games successfully attracts journalists around the world to capture its every stunning moment, behind the games, there is also a group of quiet yet hardworking and devoted people that deserve our attention.  

Masks may cover faces, but not smiles and enthusiasm

The first thing for the correspondents entering the Media Center, after passing the security check, is to get their media kit at the Accreditation Centre. Thus, volunteers here have to be the earliest arrivers and the latest leavers.

At the Reception Desk, student volunteer Xue Xiaotian who’s in charge of printing out the shuttle bus schedules, is ready to offer help to journalists coming to him with various questions.

 “The facial masks cover the volunteers’ faces, and sometimes I can’t hear their voices clearly, but I do appreciate their help. And I could tell their smiles and willingness to help from their eyes. They have left me with unforgettable memories.” A reporter once said so.

Masks may hide the volunteers’ glowing faces, but their smiles are still sincere enough to brighten up everyone around them.

Growth, the “finest gift” from the Winter Olympics

Half month ago, Li Ziting was worried about her spoken Spanish, but now she can answer different kinds of phone calls calmly, reply various emails on behalf of the Mixed Zone and the Press Conference Room, as well as register and distribute the reservation information expertly.

Yang Liu, a Czech Language major, received a special gift from Czech Television reporters, a T-shirt with Czech features. Yang gave them a little doll of the Year of Tiger in return.

When asked about the feelings of spending the Spring Festival away from home, Yin Yuxing said that while she was serving for the Winter Olympics, her doctor mother was also working at a hospital serving for her patients. Despite the pity of not returning home, she was proud that they were both doing something meaningful during the Spring Festival.

Engaged in media-related work here, our volunteers are gaining precious growth.

 “Even though we only work behind the scenes, it is significantly meaningful and worthwhile to serve the media workers well and assist them to better broadcast the Beijing Winter Olympic Games amid the pandemic precautions. ”
