CUC R&D and Demonstration Application of Cloud Connected Audience Interactive Experience System applied to Beijing 2022

Communication University of China (CUC) undertakes a key special project called R&D and Demonstration Application of Cloud Connected Audience Interactive Experience System, a part of the national R&D planTechnology Olympics.Its research result is going to be applied to the pre-game 10-minute light show before 38 curling games.  

In the past events, about 7,000 light sticks arranged in the audience can separately display 256 colors and are incorporated into the game part under the control of the system integration with the aim of bringing up the live atmosphere and cheer for both sides of the players. The application of the research result has attracted extensive attention from all walks of life and been praised by all sides. More than 30 media from home and abroad, such as Xinhua New Agency, Peoples Daily Online, CCTV.com and CRI, reported the technology achievement in depth.

During the creative process of the project, the R&D and content creation team from School of Animation and Digital Arts of CUC overcome several difficulties, such as short site test time, large intervals between intelligent light sticks, limited brightness, etc., in accordance with the Olympic content development standard. The team took full advantage of CUC animation creation to create 16 theme animations including Space Focus, Happy Panda, Beijing Street Scene, Hockey Icon, 6 effect animations and 9 coordination animations for National Indoor Stadium and Cadillac Arena, in addition to the entrance animations for 24 participating countries.

A few days before the Winter Olympics, the sport display team came up with the requirement of using the audience light sticks system to cooperate with the on-site cheerleader performance. CUC team made a lot of efforts to deal with the unexpected demand. Eventually, using intelligent light sticks, the team created an animation, which was full of sense of rhythm, and it made a great contribution to the live performance effect.

Under the special condition of pandemic prevention and control, the project achievement realized the on-site atmosphere maintenance . Combining with the projection, special lighting and other visual effects, they use large-scale wireless group control technology to control the light sticks in the audience to display the beautiful dynamic patterns. A large number of applications of digital lighting and projection technology have also become one of the highlights of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The“R&D and Demonstration Application of Cloud Connected Audience Interactive Experience System”project is led by CUC. Many units from CUC, such as State Key Laboratory of Media Convergence and Communication, School of Animation and Digital Arts,School of Information and Communication Engineering, School of Computer Science and Cyberspace Security and other key laboratories, took full use of their scientific research power to complete the task. The research results have been applied to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition, it will also continue to play its role as an Olympic heritage.
