9th World Women University Presidents Forum held in Xi’an

The 9th World Women University Presidents Forum was held from November 6 to 7 in Xi’an, joined by almost 200 female university presidents from 64 countries and regions.

Themed on Global Empathy, Mutual Learning among Civilizations and University Innovation, the forum was held both online and offline, exploring topics of global importance—constructing a community with shared future for mankind in the post-pandemic era, promoting the mutual understanding between different cultures, advancing university innovation and advocating women leadership.

At the opening ceremony, Chen Zhili,  Vice-Chairman of the 11th Standing Committee of NPC and the Chairman of 10th ACWF (the All-China Women's Federation), delivered a speech. She praised the forum's work in women growth and leadership as well as academic exchange, and encouraged participants to walk ahead of the time and lead the trend of education innovation and women movements. The former Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova and other honored guests also addressed to express their concern in women's rights, female educators' roles in education and challenges in the new circumstances.

On behalf of the hosts, Liao Xiangzhong, Secretary of the Party Committee and the President of CUC, delivered a speech. He spoke highly of the role that the forum had been  playing over the past 20 years and appreciated the group of women university presidents represented by the former CUC President Liu Jinan for carrying forward the forum’s determination and mission. He pointed out that the forum has become an important cross-continental, cross-civilization and cross-border platform to promote the exchanges and cooperation in higher education. He expected that experts and scholars participating in the forum would have in-depth discussions and full exchanges around the theme, so as to facilitate mutual learning of different civilizations.

The keynote speech part was held around the theme of the forum, with speeches from Chen Xu,  Secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University, Saniye Gülser Corat, the former Director of the Division for Gender Equality Office, UNESCO and other distinguished attendees.

The thematic round table part was chaired by Gao Xiaohong, the deputy director of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Modern Women Leadership, and Director of the Institute of Communication Studies of CUC. This part focused on the theme of "The 20th Anniversary of the Forum—History and Future". Before the roundtable discussion started, a special documentary film The Gentle Water Systemwas played in review of the past 20 years of the forum.

At  the closing ceremony, 10 universities including Massey University of New Zealand, Josai International University and other eight universities won the "Special Contribution Memorial Award" of the forum. Seven university presidents together announced the "Xi'an Declaration", and then participants at the meeting unanimously approved the "Xi'an Declaration" to determine that the 10th World Women University Presidents Forum would be held in the Jilin International Studies University.

The World Women University Presidents Forum was founded by the Communication University of China (formerly Beijing Broadcasting Institute) in August 2001, orienting to women, education and the world.
