Daniel Oloo, a doctoral student in CUC from Kenya, won the second prize in a photography and digital artwork contest held by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya and the Kenyan Union of journalists (KUJ). On occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly, this contest aimed at promoting exchanges of civilizations around the world on the theme “Together, Stronger”.
Daniel’s work is based on his life in southwest frontier of China. In his short video, Daniel records the unique way of poverty alleviation in Malipo County in Yunnan Province and Jinping County in Guizhou Province.There the Chinese government takes various measures to set up cooperatives to sell products ,and offered local ethnic minority groups with certain subsidies to make profits through online merchant platforms.
Daniel’s trip to southwest China was in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic, and Daniel took this opportunity to learn how to deal with the epidemic and discrimination against infectious diseases. These concerns were also shown in his video.

Daniel Oloo said that the study in Communication University of China had enhanced his writing, photography, design and many other essential skills necessary for being a journalist, and that these skills equipped him with the ability to better participate in practical activities.

It was reported that this event had received a large number of excellent works, covering a variety of themes, such as people-to-people exchanges, multilateral cooperation in various fields, and the unity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. In the review on December 14th, 2020, 38 photographic works stood out. These works were mostly from professional journalists, photographers and graphic designers from major international media, including People’s Daily Africa, CGTN Africa, China Daily Africa, Xinhua News Agency, Nation Media Group and Standard Media Group.
