Students majoring in German at the Communication University of China (CUC) attended an open house event on Saturday at the German Embassy in Beijing at the invitation of the German Government.

The students were warmly welcomed to the annual open day by Germany’s ambassador to China, Michael Clauss. The ambassador spoke about the role of German culture in the development of sophisticated and high-quality products for which Germany has become renowned worldwide.

The oppressive heat on the day was not enough to dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees. In 2017 the theme of the open house was sport – specifically, Germany’s love of football. This year’s theme turned to the topic of manufacturing, ranging from small workshop craftsmanship to complex high-tech manufactures.

The embassy prepared displays of products from German tech companies, and a photography exhibition about contemporary manufacturing. And on the lighter side of things, they invited representatives from a German education consultancy to speak with students about study-abroad opportunities, and a cooking demonstration for guests hungry for a taste of German culture.

The visit to the German embassy this past weekend provided students from the Communications University of China with a broader and deeper understanding about Germany, the country they are studying now and in the future many will live in. It was, for the students, an opportunity to be exposed to authentic German technology, culture, and food, and it an environment that gave them the chance to hone their German language skills.

The open house event at the German Embassy in Beijing several years ago started what has since become an annual tradition, providing a look at some of what makes Germany and German culture unique.
