CUC Co-hosts the 2nd China-Vietnam Higher Education Dialogue on Journalism and Communication

Abstract:
The 2nd China-Vietnam Higher Education Dialogue on Journalism and Communication was held Dec. 4–5 in Hue, Vietnam. Co-hosted by CUC and VNU Hanoi-USSH, the event brought together 27 universities from both countries to discuss talent cultivation, AI-driven media transformation, and cross-border cooperation in journalism education.

The Second China-Vietnam Higher Education Dialogue on Journalism and Communication was held Dec. 4-5 in Hue, Vietnam, bringing together university leaders, experts, scholars, and graduate student representatives from institutions in both countries for in-depth discussions on cultivating journalism and communication professionals.

The dialogue was jointly hosted by the International Communication Joint Research Institute of the Ministry of Education under the Communication University of China (CUC) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU Hanoi-USSH), with the University of Sciences under Hue University as the local organizer.


Participants included representatives from 17 Chinese institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, and Zhejiang University, as well as 10 Vietnamese universities including the VNU Hanoi-USSH and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM-USSH).

Bui Quang Vu, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University of Sciences, Hue University, noted in his opening speech that the first China-Vietnam Higher Education Dialogue on Journalism and Communication, held in September last year during CUC's 70th-anniversary celebrations, laid a solid foundationfor bilateral exchange and cooperation. He expressed the hope that the second dialogue would mark a new beginning for deeper collaboration between universities in both countries in curriculum development, faculty exchange, and joint training programs to cultivate more versatile media professionals.

Chai Jianping, Vice President of CUC, emphasized that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of China-Vietnam diplomatic relations and the "China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges",calling on universities in both countries' journalism and communication sectors to advance cooperation mechanisms, implement joint projects, and explore future-oriented approaches to intelligent media education. He stated that CUC would continue to leverage the International Communication Joint Research Institute to facilitate platform building and services for bilateral university cooperation.

Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice Rector of VNU Hanoi-USSH, highlighted the frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries as a strong foundation. She pointed out that technologies like AI and big data are reshaping global communication systems and expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation with Chinese counterparts in interdisciplinary research and digital technology education.

The dialogue featured three dedicated forums. In the Leaders' Forum, 16 university leaders, deans, and heads of journalism and communication departments explored topics like educational transformation in the post-digital era, the deepening of China-Vietnam cultural exchanges, and the upgrading cross-border higher education cooperation mechanisms, drawing on the unique strengths and academic features of their respective institutions.

During the Scholars' Forum, 13 experts and academics from China and Vietnam discussed innovations in journalism and communication education in the post-digital era and offered practical suggestions for advancing substantive cooperation between universities in the two countries.

In the Graduate Students' Forum, 14 master's and doctoral students discussed cutting-edge communication topics such as building an international communication community and China-Vietnam folk communication via short videos, and regional brand communication.

Prior to the commencement of the dialogue, the delegation from CUC held a bilateral meeting with representatives of VNU Hanoi-USSH. Chai Jianping stated that CUC would work with VNU Hanoi-USSH to further consolidate the foundation of cooperation, expand the scope of collaboration, and amplify mutually beneficial outcomes, adding that the partnership between the two universities would serve as a base for promoting international exchange and cooperation across ASEAN, Asia and beyond.


Dang Thi Thu Huong expressed that higher education in journalism and communication in Vietnam is currently at a critical stage of innovative transformation. She conveyed a keen expectation to deepen collaboration with leading Chinese institutions like CUC, aiming to jointly build a future-oriented journalism and communication education system and cooperative ecosystem.


The event received wide coverage from major Vietnamese media outlets, including the Báo Nhân Dân (People's Newspaper), the Báo Thanh Niên (Youth Newspaper), the Báo Tin Tức (News Newspaper), and Truyền hình Huế (Hue Television).
